We will also discuss purification methods.
Alternative Energy
What happens when the power goes out? Learn about the alternatives – solar, gas, propane, backup battery. We will cover general maintenance and set up. Also how to use generators during a power outage.
The well stocked pantry
Imagine a major disaster in your community – a fire, a flood, a devastating earthquake. Surface streets are impassable and freeways are down. Your local grocery stores are either closed or their shelves are wiped bare. How do you feed your family and for how long? The “Well Stocked Pantry” exhibit will empower you to prepare delicious and nutritious meals with food you already have in your pantry. Attendees will learn how to prepare meals from everyday foods that are likely already in your pantry. Best of all, guests will be able to sample many of the prepared foods.
communications
- Own a 2-way radio and listen to LOCAL disaster updates or seek help when no cell, Internet or power are available.
- Access an Emergency Website and report your location and well-being so loved ones, officials and 1st responders know your status.
- The Baofeng UV-5R, hand held radio allows you to listen and talk from almost anywhere in Thousand Oaks, Santa Rosa Valley or Moorpark. We help you set up the radio and train you to use it. No licensing required.
- The Emergency Website AND the 2-way radio can reunite families separated in a disaster. You could also reach LOCAL volunteers with medical, construction, mechanical and heavy equipment skills and equipment for assistance.
- Reliable communication and neighbors helping each other are critical during a major disaster.
- Visit our display at the EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS FAIR for demonstrations and more details.
72 hour kits
Whether we have big or small emergencies; or disaster keeps us at home or requires us to evacuate, we will be better prepared to deal with the situation, and to help others, if we have adequate emergency supplies on hand—and know where they are!.
Our 72 hour emergency booth will feature emergency preparedness items with today’s technology, storage and organization ideas, dollar store finds, a free 72 hour kit checklist, a list of community resources, free emergency medical cards, and examples of small first-aid kits—perfect for grab and go. We will have snacks, treats and more! If you’ve lived in Ventura County, you’ve been through earthquakes, floods, fires, windstorms and power outages. Please come and share your preparedness ideas!
